Youth for History · America 250

In 2026, the United States marks 250 years since the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. It is a moment not only to remember the past, but also to explore the people, places, ideas, and experiences that have shaped our communities—and to consider the stories we will carry forward.

A Moment to Look Back—and Look Forward

America’s 250th anniversary offers a once-in-a-generation opportunity to learn more about the nation’s history through the stories closest to us. Here in Washington, that means exploring the history of our cities and towns, Tribal Nations, immigrant communities, industries, schools, landmarks, landscapes, and the people whose experiences have shaped the state we know today.

Washington’s 250th Commemoration

Washington’s Semiquincentennial Committee coordinates the state’s official observance of America’s 250th anniversary. Established by the Washington State Legislature in 2022, the committee is chaired by the Lieutenant Governor and supported by the Washington State Historical Society.

Washington’s commemoration connects people with history, supports history and civics education, strengthens local heritage organizations, and encourages communities across the state to take part.
